Newborn Ribbed Pullover and Hat

yes... more green

simple ribbed newborn pullover and hatThis project is a bit out of order. I actually made it during my trip to Salt Lake for the Climb4Life (a girl really could get used to sitting in first class). It's a simple 3x3 ribbed sweater and hat sized for a newborn. I actually used a sock yarn in orer to get the guage right. BUT.. it being a sock yarn -- I think the sweater will be very durable and can get washed over and over without any problems. Guess I'll find out.

  • the pattern: #29 Pullover and Hat from the Fall 2007 Knit Simple Magazine
  • the materials:
    • 1 ball Sockotta Sock Yarn, color 816 by Plymouth Yarn Co
(one ball was plenty for the newborn-sized sweater and hat, I even have a 1.5" ball leftover, so it may be possible to do the 3 month size from 1 ball.)
    • 2 circular size 3 needles
    • 2 buttons
  • the modifications: I actually didn't make any modifications from the pattern, I knit these just as the instructions state.

Root Canal Redux

a pain in the tooth

my tooth xrayEarlier this weekend my front tooth started hurting. It kind of felt like I had knocked my tooth on something... but I hadn't. And it was really just the one tooth. It wasn't a shooting pain, but more of a dull ache up near the root, not in the exposed tooth itself.

Today I called the dentist to have him check it out. They got me right in, and took a snazzy x-ray.

11-ish years ago I got a root canal on my right front tooth after an incident in the batting cage where a ball glanced off my bat and smacked me right in the mouth. As it turns out, I'm developing a bit of an infection at the top of the root, so my dentist thinks I need to get my root canal re-done. Fun fun. The good thing is, because the tooth already has no nerve from the previous root canal, I probably won't need to have much local anesthesia.

Completed: a nice green sweater

hopefully it will fit!

I finished knitting all the pieces of my nice green sweater a couple months ago, I think in the beginning of August. I only had a couple safety pins, so I wasn't able to sew it all together, and then I was wisked away to the opposite side of the country for a couple trips (see my knitting projects between August and now). BUT I was a good girl and actually blocked all the pieces, so that once I had some time and some patience, I could finish the sweater. Goodness knows I hate to finish knitting projects. Sewing together all those pieces... weaving in all those ends... oh and buttons... sewing over a dozen buttons isn't the most fun you can have on a Saturday night. But hey, you only live once, right?

So... here it is, my nice green sweater:

    • Because the yarn I chose has a smaller guage than the one used in the pattern, I actually had to knit the "large" pattern in order to get one that measures the size of the "small" (here's the calculations I made earlier to make sure I made the right size swater. And to my pleasant suprise, the finished sweater measures just as I expected. I just hope it will fit come this winter.

Fuzzy Felted Hedgehog

a Sonic-ish toy

This weekend was our annual trip to Ocean City, MD to go to H2O International, a VW/Audi car show. This year I went to Annapolis for a day to visit my dear friend Kristin starring in the play Incorruptible. She did great. It was really neat to see her in a play again. I look forward to her next performance (whenever she happens to get the acting itch next).

I had to do some serious arm-twisting to get her to take me to a yarn shop (ok... maybe there was no twisting involved). So we went to The Yarn Garden, a nice little shop in Annapolis. They had a nice selection of patterns. The store could have benefitted from a bit of organization, but most stores do. They had a bunch of finished items around the store, including this adorable felted hedgehog. Kristin helped me find some great colors to make it out of. I'm really happy with how it came out. (Thanks to Simeon who immediately noticed the similarity to Sonic the Hedgehog, I honestly didn't pick up on it).

  • the materials
    • 1 ball Galway worsted weight 100% wool yarn by Plymouth Yarn Co color 137 (210yds/ball)
    • 2 balls ONline yarn's "Fantasy", color 4 (45m/ball)
    • a few dozen yards of other worsted weight wool yarn for the paws (I used some white scrap wool yarn)
    • a couple yards of other yarn for the eyes/nose (I used some black scrap wool yarn)
    • lots of polyfill
    • size D crochet hook
    • tapestry needle
    • some scrap cotton yarn for basting
    • washing machine
  • the size
    • about 10 inches x 10 inches x 10 inches
  • the pattern
  • the modifications
    • eyes: The pattern recommends buttons, but this being for a baby, I didn't want the choking hazard, so I crocheted some eyes (following the same pattern I did for Sheldon the turtle), and sewed them on with way too much yarn.
    • nose: Again the pattern recommended buttons but instead, I just used some black worsted-weight wool yarn to needled point the nose using a simple straight back-and-forth stitch (I'm sure that's the "proper" term for that stitch).
    • felting: I've found that adding a heavy color-safe towel to the washer when I felt something helps to get the item to get some fore friction and thus felt better.
    • before stuffing: I used a crochet hook to pull out some of the "fur" to the right-side of the work... it seemed like he was very furry on the inside and all of that fur would just be wasted.
    • finishing: I actually closed the seam using a simple single-crochet stitch using some of the yarn I used for the body. I was a bit paranoid that I'd end up hating the eyes/nose, so this way I can somewhat-easily undo the seam, unstuff the hedgehog and redo the eyes if they really start bugging me. But also - the seam is totally secured.
